Job Title: Babysitter's Training, Child Care, and Caregiving Instructor, Assistant Instructor


Position Overview:

We are seeking a compassionate, engaging, and youth-focused Babysitter's Training Instructor to deliver the American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Program and other child care and caregiving courses. These courses empower youth ages 11-16 to care safely and responsibly for children and infants while developing leadership, safety awareness, and business skills.

The American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Program, updated for 2025, is evidence-based and informed by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and the American Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines. Program content is developed with oversight from the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Councila panel of over 60 nationally and internationally recognized experts in pediatrics, emergency medicine, resuscitation, education, and child safety.


Learners will:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Learn how to start and manage a babysitting business
  • Understand how to care for children and infants
  • Practice basic first aid and emergency action steps
  • Gain confidence to keep themselves and others safe


Work Schedule :

  • Classes run 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM CT
  • Instructors are expected to arrive at least 30 minutes prior (by 8:30 AM) and remain approximately 30 minutes after (until ~3:30 PM) for setup, cleanup, and takedown
  • Classes may be scheduled at your convenience, typically:
  • Weekdays during summer and school breaks
  • Weekends during the school year
  • Instructor teaches 12 classes per month, with flexibility based on instructor availability and seasonal demand


Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate American Red Cross Babysitter's Training and caregiving courses
  • Set up and clean up classroom spaces and materials
  • Provide instruction in basic child care (feeding, diapering, activity planning, behavior management) and safety
  • Teach emergency action steps, including Check-Call-Care, basic first aid, and choking response
  • Monitor student participation, provide supportive feedback, and track attendance
  • Maintain Red Cross training standards and ensure safe, respectful learning environments
  • Stay up-to-date on Red Cross guidelines and educational best practices for youth

Education:

  • Required: High school diploma/GED
  • Preferred: Associate's degree in childcare, early childhood education, or similar.

Experience:

  • Minimum:
  • Certification as an American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Instructor (or willingness to obtain as part of contract; course would be offered for free to accepted applicants)
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain as part of contract; course would be offered for free to accepted applicants)
  • 1 year experience working with youth or children in child care, education, or mentorship
  • Preferred:
  • 3+ years in early childhood education, school nursing, pediatrics, or youth programs
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
  • Experience facilitating interactive group learning or youth safety programs

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Minimim - American Red Cross Basic Life Support Instructor, and Basic Life Support basic-level certification (need to obtain by hire date).
  • Preferred - additional certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and other American Red Cross Instructor certificates.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development, emergency preparedness, and basic caregiving techniques

Physical Requirements:

  • Light: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Ability to stand, kneel, or move around during instruction. Climb one flight of stairs to the training center - there is no elevator.

Work Environment:

  • Classes are conducted in-person at the ProACT Academy training center in Madison, WI near West Towne mall.

Independent Contractor Status

  • This position is classified as a 1099 Independent Contractor. As such, the instructor is not an employee of ProACT Academy and is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and any required licensure. Contractors have the freedom to set their own availability and are not guaranteed any minimum number of classes or hours. This contract does not constitute an offer of employment and does not include benefits such as health insurance, unemployment insurance, or workers' compensation.

At-Will Agreement

  • The contractor agreement may be terminated at any time by either party, with or without cause, and with or without notice. ProACT Academy also reserves the right to discontinue scheduling or remove the contractor from the instructor roster at its discretion.
