Overview 

The Advanced Life Support (ALS) Instructor Residency Program at ProACT Critical Care Academy is a focused, high-level teaching program for instructors seeking to specialize in Adult Advanced Life Support courses. This residency provides an in-depth, hands-on experience to prepare instructors for teaching advanced resuscitation skills to healthcare providers. Utilizing ProACT's advanced facilities, residents will develop the expertise required to train professionals in lifesaving interventions for critical adult patients. 

Program Objectives 

  • Master the delivery of American Red Cross Adult Advanced Life Support courses. 
  • Develop expertise in teaching advanced airway management, pharmacology, and team-based resuscitation. 
  • Build the confidence and skillset necessary to train healthcare providers in high-stakes, advanced care scenarios. 
  • Enhance leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills for professional-level instruction. 
  • Contribute to the improvement of patient outcomes through high-quality advanced life support education. 

Eligibility Requirements 

  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  • Hold current certification as an American Red Cross Advanced Life Support Instructor (or obtain certification prior to residency start). 
  • Have prior experience teaching or working in a healthcare or emergency response setting. 
  • Be available to teach six ALS classes over the eight-month residency duration. 
  • Pass a background check. 

Program Structure 

The eight-month residency program is flexible, allowing residents to coordinate their schedule with supervising instructors. The program includes the following components: 

Orientation and Advanced Training: 

  1. Orientation to ProACT's mission, facilities, and advanced training equipment. 
  2. Comprehensive review of Adult Advanced Life Support course materials and instructor methodologies. 
  3. Observation of experienced instructors teaching ALS courses. 

Co-Teaching: 

  1. Collaborate with experienced ALS instructors to co-teach at least one advanced course. 
  2. Gain experience delivering advanced modules, including high-performance CPR, advanced airway techniques, and pharmacological interventions. 
  3. Receive detailed feedback and mentorship from ProACT's Training Coordinators. 

Independent Teaching: 

  1. After co-teaching at least one course, residents may begin teaching independently. 
  2. Conduct six ALS classes over the program's duration, focusing on adult advanced life support. 
  3. Lead all aspects of class delivery, including simulation-based scenarios and skill evaluations. 

Ongoing Mentorship: 

  1. Engage in regular feedback sessions with supervising instructors and mentors. 
  2. Receive support in addressing challenges unique to advanced life support education. 

Final Assessment: 

  1. Deliver a final teaching session observed by ProACT leadership. 
  2. Participate in a personalized evaluation session to review performance and growth opportunities. 
  3. Develop a professional development plan to continue advancing instructional skills.
